Take a Tour!
The Violet Fern Garden was born in the spring of 2008 using sustainable, organic practices, and does not follow traditional landscaping models nor focus upon showy flowers. The garden may seem understated at first sight but focuses on supporting wildlife and creating habitat even in a village setting and contains substantial native plantings. The Violet Fern Garden is the future of gardening and was built with layers in mind: high trees, low story trees, vines, shrubs, perennials, and ground covers to offer the greatest biodiversity. There are blooms throughout the season from early spring into fall to support pollinators. Many bird species including shy warblers and even a Cuckoo Bird, have visited the garden as well as chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, and even a possum.
Feel free to take a tour here online but it is more encompassing to tour the garden in person and experience the bird song, buzzing of bees, scents, the noise of a surrounding village, and the enveloping blanket of this private oasis. (Oh, the showy flowers are next door at my neighbor's — gardening is contagious.)
